Morocco Unveiled
Essaouira
The Windy City — ramparts, argan oil & gnawa music
Essaouira is Morocco's exhale. After the intensity of the imperial cities, this fortified Atlantic port — all white walls, blue shutters and screaming gulls — moves at the speed of its fishing boats. Jimi Hendrix came in '69; the laid-back gene persists.
The trade winds that once powered a sultan's port now power one of the world's great windsurfing scenes, and the medina (UNESCO-listed, mercifully flat, largely hassle-free) is the country's most relaxed place to wander, shop and eat straight-off-the-boat seafood.
Essaouira is Morocco's exhale.
What to Do
Essential Essaouira Experiences
The Skala ramparts at sunset
Brass cannons, crashing Atlantic, and the island of Mogador offshore — Game of Thrones' Astapor, in fact.
The fishing port at auction hour
Blue boats unload sardines to a mob of gulls and buyers — then eat the catch grilled at the port-side stalls.
Kitesurf or windsurf Sidi Kaouki
The alizé winds blow ~300 days a year; schools in town run lessons for all levels.
Gnawa music at a café-concert
The hypnotic guembri-and-krakebs trance music was born partly here — the June festival is world-famous, but it plays year-round.

Amlou
Argan oil, almonds and honey — Morocco's answer to Nutella, from the women's argan cooperatives on the Marrakech road.
Seafood pastilla
The coastal remix of the Fez classic — best at Elizir or La Table by Madada.
Know Before You Go
Insider Tips
- The wind is constant — pack a layer, and beach days mean sheltered coves south at Sidi Kaouki.
- Essaouira is walkable and flat: no need for taxis inside the walls.
- Buy argan oil only from certified cooperatives (look for the UCFA label).
- Day trip from Marrakech is possible (2.5h each way) but an overnight is the town's true speed.
