United Arab Emirates
Dubai's superlatives, desert silence & the Gulf's grand experiment
The UAE is the world's most successful plot twist: fishing villages that became, in one lifetime, a skyline of superlatives — tallest tower, biggest mall, busiest international airport. Dubai is easy to caricature and hard to leave unimpressed by; it does spectacle with total commitment and zero irony.
The savvy visit plays both emirates and both registers: Dubai for the vertiginous new, Abu Dhabi for the Louvre and the Grand Mosque's white serenity — and then the oldest register of all, an hour out of town: red dunes, falcons, and desert-camp silence under the same stars the Bedouin traders steered by.
Spectacle with total commitment and zero irony — and Bedouin silence an hour away.
Don't Miss
The Unmissables
The Dubai skyline, from above and below
Burj Khalifa's observation decks at sunset (book the slot, skip the queue-price regret), then the fountain show from a Dubai Mall terrace. For the street-level version: old Dubai's creek, abra boats at one dirham a crossing, and the gold and spice souks.
Burj Al Arab & the coast
The sail-shaped icon on its private island anchors a beach strip that runs from public Kite Beach (burgers, paddleboards, skyline views) to the resort mile of Palm Jumeirah. High tea in the Burj is the classic look-inside ticket.
Desert safari, done right
Skip the dune-bashing conveyor belts for a conservation-reserve operator: falconry at dusk, camels at sunset, dinner in a Bedouin-style camp and — the real luxury — silence. Overnight stays add dawn in the dunes, the desert's best hour.
Abu Dhabi's cultural pivot
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — 82 white domes, the world's largest carpet, genuinely moving at sunset prayer time — plus the Louvre Abu Dhabi under its rain-of-light dome. The capital is quietly building the Gulf's cultural counterweight.
