The Pamir Highway (M41)
The world's second-highest highway — a legendary 1,200km overland journey from Dushanbe to Osh, crossing the 4,655m Ak-Baital pass, skirting the Afghan border along the Panj river, and threading a moonscape of high plateau, salt lakes and Kyrgyz yurt camps. One of Earth's ultimate road trips.
Iskanderkul
A stunning turquoise glacial lake in the Fann Mountains, named after Alexander the Great, ringed by jagged peaks and reached by a dramatic mountain road from Dushanbe. A nearby waterfall and lakeside guesthouses make it the country's most accessible mountain escape.
The Wakhan Valley

High summer
The only reliable window for the Pamir passes and high treks — warm days, open roads.
Shoulder
Fann Mountains and lower valleys are glorious; high passes may still hold snow.
Edges
Dushanbe and lowlands fine, but mountain access is limited and weather unpredictable.
Winter
Passes closed, deep snow and brutal cold at altitude — the Pamir shuts down.
