Sri Lanka fits an implausible amount of world onto one island you can cross in a day: eight UNESCO sites, leopard-dense national parks, a hill country of tea and waterfalls, two thousand years of Buddhist art, and a coastline that surfs on one side while the other sits mirror-calm — swapping roles with the monsoon.

The Unmissables
The train to Ella & Nine Arch Bridge
Six hours from Kandy through tea terraces, cloud forest and blue-painted stations. In Ella, walk the tracks to Nine Arch Bridge for the mid-morning train crossing — then climb Little Adam's Peak for the sunset panorama.
Tea country highlands
Emerald plantations stitched over every hillside around Nuwara Eliya and Haputale, pluckers working the rows at dawn. Tour a working factory, drink it at source at Lipton's Seat, and pack a fleece — "Little England" earns the name at night.
Leopards & elephant gatherings
Yala has the world's densest leopard population; Udawalawe guarantees wild elephants by the herd; and in dry season, Minneriya's "Gathering" masses hundreds around the reservoir — Asia's greatest wildlife spectacle.
Galle Fort & the surf south
