Alpine lakes, emerald rivers & Europe in loveable miniature
Slovenia is Europe run through a "best of" filter and shrunk to weekend size: Julian Alps that rival Switzerland at a third of the price, a lake with a church on an island and a castle on a cliff, a river so improbably emerald it looks colour-graded, and a capital whose entire centre is a car-free, café-lined riverbank.
Half the country is forest, a fifth is protected, and nothing is more than three hours from anything else. It's the easiest great trip on the continent — and the one travelers most consistently wish they'd given more days.

The Unmissables
Lake Bled
The island church, the clifftop castle, the Alps behind — Bled is almost unfair. Row a pletna to the island, ring the wishing bell, walk the full lake loop (90 minutes of changing angles), and earn the kremšnita cream cake that is the official currency of Bled happiness.
The Soča Valley
The "Emerald Beauty" runs glacier-green through gorges made for rafting, canyoning and fly-fishing, past WWI's Isonzo front turned open-air museum. Base in Bovec or Kobarid — which also happens to hold some of Slovenia's best restaurants.
Ljubljana's riverside theatre
Plečnik's bridges and colonnades, dragons on guard, willow-shaded café terraces on both banks and a castle funicular above it all. Friday's Open Kitchen market turns the centre into one long alfresco dinner party, March through October.
Piran & the sliver of coast
Forty-six kilometres of Adriatic, used perfectly: Venetian-Gothic Piran on its point, salt pans that still harvest by hand at Sečovlje, and seafood dinners where Italy's prices forgot to follow the recipes across the border.
