Singapore gets dismissed as a layover and deserves better: nowhere else packs three great cuisines, a rainforest, a futurist skyline and the world's most efficient everything into a city you can cross in forty minutes. It's the easiest possible landing in Asia — and sneakily one of its most rewarding short stays.

The soul of the place is the hawker centre: UNESCO-listed food culture where a Michelin meal costs five dollars and every stall has a forty-year backstory. Come hungry, stay three days, and let the city's obsessive competence do the rest.

A Michelin meal for five dollars, in a city you can cross in forty minutes.

Don't Miss

The Unmissables

Gardens by the Bay
01

Gardens by the Bay

The Supertrees' nightly light-and-sound show is free and genuinely moving; the Cloud Forest dome hides a 35-metre indoor waterfall wrapped in mist. Come at dusk, walk the OCBC Skyway between the trees, and stay for the 7:45 Rhapsody.

Marina Bay after dark
02

Marina Bay after dark

The triple-towered Sands, the Helix Bridge, the ArtScience lotus — a skyline built in one generation, best absorbed on the waterfront loop at night. The Sands SkyPark deck (or a rooftop bar at half the price) gives the aerial version.

Hawker centre pilgrimage
03

Hawker centre pilgrimage

Maxwell for chicken rice, Lau Pa Sat for satay street, Old Airport Road for the connoisseur's spread — chilli crab, char kway teow, laksa and Michelin-starred soya chicken at food-court prices. Eat like it's a competitive sport; here, it is.

The neighbourhood trinity
04

The neighbourhood trinity

Chinatown's temple streets, Little India's garlanded chaos and colour, Kampong Glam's golden-domed mosque and Haji Lane murals — three worlds within three MRT stops, each with its own lunch you shouldn't skip.
