Mountain gorillas, volcano lakes & Africa's astonishing comeback
Rwanda is the story of how far a country can come. Thirty years after unimaginable tragedy, the "land of a thousand hills" is among Africa's safest, cleanest and best-run nations — plastic bags banned, streets spotless, a capital humming with cafés and confidence. And it protects one of the planet's most moving wildlife encounters: an hour, at arm's length, with a family of mountain gorillas.
That encounter is expensive and rationed by design, funding the conservation that brought the gorillas back from the brink. But Rwanda offers more than the permit-day: golden monkeys and volcano hikes in the Virungas, chimps and canopy walks at Nyungwe, lion and rhino returned to Akagera, and Lake Kivu's beaches for the decompression after.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes NP
The permit is $1,500 and worth every cent: a guided hike up bamboo-forested volcano slopes to spend a strictly-timed hour with a habituated gorilla family — silverback, mothers, tumbling infants — a few metres away. This is Dian Fossey's country, and the encounter recalibrates how you see the natural world.
The Virunga volcanoes
Beyond the gorillas, the chain of five volcanoes offers golden-monkey tracking, the poignant hike to Dian Fossey's grave and research camp, and summit climbs (Bisoke's crater lake, Karisimbi's 4,507m) through Afro-alpine forest. Base at Kinigi beneath the peaks.
Kigali's remarkable renaissance
Africa's cleanest, safest capital rewards a proper day: the essential and unflinching Genocide Memorial, a thriving coffee-and-craft scene, moto-taxi buzz on the hills, and a warmth that makes the country's recovery feel personal. Monthly community cleanup (Umuganda) shows the discipline behind it.
Nyungwe, Akagera & Lake Kivu
