Muscat & the Grand Mosque
The capital hugs the coast in low white sprawl beneath jagged mountains — the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque's serene marble and the world's second-largest hand-woven carpet, the Mutrah Corniche and souk at dusk, and an opera house that signals Oman's cultured confidence. Arabia at its most dignified.
Wadi Shab & the mountain pools
A boat and a 40-minute walk into a palm-lined canyon lead to a chain of emerald pools you swim through to a hidden waterfall inside a cave — Oman's most magical spot. Wadi Bani Khalid and the terraced Jebel Akhdar villages complete the mountain-oasis picture.
The Wahiba Sands
Apricot dunes rolling to the horizon, best experienced from a desert camp: 4x4 dune-bashing at sunset, camel rides, Bedouin dinners, and a silence and star-field that the Gulf's cities have long since lost. Dawn on a dune crest is the desert's gift.
Jebel Akhdar & the forts
The "Green Mountain" at 2,000m — terraced rose and pomegranate gardens, dramatic canyon-rim viewpoints, and a cool escape from the heat. Below, the restored mud-brick forts of Nizwa, Bahla and Jabreen tell a thousand years of Omani history amid Friday goat markets and silversmiths.

Cool season
Perfect 25-30°C days for wadis, dunes and mountains. The only sensible window for most of the country.
Peak winter
Ideal desert-camp and hiking temperatures, turtle nesting at Ras al Jinz, clear skies.
Khareef monsoon
The far-south Dhofar coast turns misty green during the monsoon — a uniquely Arabian phenomenon worth timing.
Summer
Brutal 45°C+ heat across the north; only the coast and high mountains offer relief.
