Norway is what happens when glaciers spend two million years doing landscape architecture: fjords cut a kilometre deep into mountain walls, islands scattered like a dropped necklace above the Arctic Circle, and roads and railways engineered through it all with such flair that the transport is half the sightseeing.

It runs on extremes — midnight sun in summer, aurora in the polar night, and prices that demand strategy (supermarkets, cabins, the right passes). But no landscape in Europe delivers awe this reliably: Lofoten alone, granite peaks straight out of a saga above turquoise Arctic bays, justifies the airfare.

Two million years of glacial landscape architecture, with transport as half the sightseeing.

Don't Miss

The Unmissables

The Lofoten Islands
01

The Lofoten Islands

Shark-tooth peaks rising from Arctic water, red rorbuer fishing cabins on stilts, and beaches that would pass for the Caribbean if not for the temperature. Drive the E10 end to end; hike Reinebringen at midnight-sun hour.

Geirangerfjord
02

Geirangerfjord

The UNESCO fjord of the postcards: waterfalls named after brides and suitors, farms clinging to ledges, and the Eagle Road's eleven hairpins for the overview. See it from the water — kayak or the short car ferry — for the full neck-craning effect.

Bergen & Bryggen
03

Bergen & Bryggen

The Hanseatic wharf's crooked wooden row in ochre and rust, fish market behind, seven mountains around. Ride the Fløibanen funicular at dusk and take the forest path down. Yes it rains; the city wears it well.

Trolltunga
04

Trolltunga

The Troll's Tongue — a rock shelf cantilevered 700 metres over Lake Ringedal. It's a serious 28km round-trip hike (10–12 hours, June–September), and the photo on the ledge is the hard-earned cliché of Norwegian summer.
