Fjord-like bays, black mountains & the Adriatic in miniature
Montenegro means "black mountain," and the little country packs improbably much between those peaks and the sea: a bay so enclosed it passes for a fjord, walled medieval towns, beaches beneath cliffs, and a wild interior of canyons and glacial lakes — all in a nation smaller than Connecticut.
The Bay of Kotor is the showpiece, but the reward is how fast the crowds thin: drive twenty minutes up the serpentine to Lovćen and you have the Adriatic's best view to yourself; head inland to Durmitor and you're in bear-and-canyon country the coastal cruisers never see.
A bay so enclosed it passes for a fjord, in a nation smaller than Connecticut.

The Bay of Kotor
Europe's southernmost "fjord": Venetian Kotor walled at the water's edge, its fortress climb (1,350 steps) rewarding with the whole bay below, and Perast's baroque churches and island chapels a short boat away. Drive the Lovćen serpentine for the aerial version.
Budva & the beach coast
The walled old town on its peninsula anchors the Budva Riviera — pebble coves, the pink-sand islet of Sveti Nikola, and Montenegro's liveliest summer scene. Quieter beaches hide south around Petrovac and the Lustica peninsula.
Sveti Stefan
The photograph that sells Montenegro: a fortified islet of terracotta roofs linked to the mainland by a sand causeway, glowing at sunset. Now an exclusive resort, but the view from the coastal road above is free and unforgettable.
Durmitor & the wild north
Glacial lakes, the Tara Canyon (Europe's deepest, rafted or bridged), and Durmitor's peaks for hiking and winter skiing — the interior most beach visitors miss. The Đurđevića Tara bridge and the drive over the Sedlo pass are destinations in themselves.
