Cliff-top capital, storybook castles & forested microstate trails
Luxembourg is one of Europe's smallest and richest countries, and one of its most underrated for a short break: its capital drapes dramatically over a gorge, ringed by ancient fortifications carved into the cliffs, while beyond the city lie storybook castles, wine-terraced river valleys and the wooded ravines of "Little Switzerland."
Trilingual, walkable and easily reached, the Grand Duchy makes a rewarding day or weekend — the UNESCO old town and its dizzying viewpoints, the Bock casemates tunnelled through the rock, and, a short drive out, the fairy-tale castle of Vianden and the sandstone trails of the Mullerthal. Small in size, big on charm.

Luxembourg City & the casemates
The UNESCO old town perches above the Alzette gorge, joined by bridges and honeycombed with the Bock casemates — kilometres of defensive tunnels carved into the cliff. Walk the Chemin de la Corniche (the "most beautiful balcony in Europe") for the dramatic view down to the Grund quarter below.
Vianden Castle
One of Europe's finest feudal castles — a restored medieval fortress crowning a hill above a pretty riverside town, all turrets and Gothic halls (Victor Hugo lived and sketched in its shadow). A chairlift and the Our valley add to the fairy-tale setting.
Mullerthal, "Little Switzerland"
A region of mossy sandstone ravines, waterfalls, forest and rock formations laced by the excellent Mullerthal Trail — Luxembourg's green heart, and a surprising slice of wild nature in a tiny, prosperous country. The Schiessentümpel waterfall is its photogenic star.
Castles & the Moselle valley
Beyond Vianden, the Grand Duchy is dotted with castles — Bourscheid on its ridge, Beaufort's ruins — while the Moselle river forms a border of terraced vineyards producing crisp whites and crémant sparkling wine. A compact, castle-and-vineyard countryside made for gentle drives.
