Two thousand years of city, reinvented every decade
London is less a city than a federation of villages that happened to acquire an empire's worth of treasure: Roman walls under glass towers, royal parks the size of small towns, and museums — free ones — holding the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles and half the history of everywhere.
The visitor's London and the living London overlap but aren't identical. Do the icons — they're icons for a reason — but give equal time to the villages: Borough Market's grazing lanes, Hampstead's heath and ponds, Columbia Road's Sunday flowers, and a proper pub with a proper Sunday roast as a non-negotiable fixture.

The Unmissables
Westminster & the river sweep
Big Ben, the Abbey (book ahead — it's a 1,000-year royal scrapbook), and the walk across Westminster Bridge at first light before the crowds own it. The Thames path east from here strings together half the city's greatest hits for free.
Tower Bridge & the Tower
The 900-year-old fortress holds the Crown Jewels, ravens with job titles, and Beefeater tours that are genuinely funny. Cross the bridge at dusk when the Shard lights up behind it — London's best skyline moment.
The red-bus theatre of the streets
Some cities have landmarks; London's streets are the landmark — black cabs, red buses, pub signs, railings. Ride the front seat, top deck of a regular double-decker (route 11 or 24 passes half the sights) for the price of a bus fare.
The South Bank mile
Borough Market's food stalls, Tate Modern's turbine hall, Shakespeare's Globe, skateboarders under the Southbank Centre, and the river always on your shoulder. London's most reliable good time, rain or shine.

When to Go
Summer
Park picnics, pub gardens, long evenings and the events calendar at full tilt. June is the sweet spot.
Christmas
Lights on Regent Street, markets on the South Bank, panto season — London does Christmas properly.
Shoulder
Fewer crowds, softer prices, daffodils or golden parks. Pack for four seasons per day.
Deep winter
Short grey days — though the free museums and cosy pubs were built for exactly this.
