Baroque old town, an island castle & Baltic soul
Lithuania is the largest and liveliest of the Baltic trio, and the one with the deepest sense of nationhood — the first Soviet republic to break away, and proud of every hard-won inch. Its capital wraps one of Europe's biggest baroque old towns around a bohemian, self-declared "republic" of artists, while beyond it lie fairy-tale island castles, a haunting hill of crosses, and dunes rolling into the Baltic.
It stays refreshingly under the radar and easy on the wallet, rewarding travelers with cobbled UNESCO streets, a hearty forest-and-lake countryside, and Curonian Spit sand dunes shared with elk and amber-hunters — a small country that feels bigger and older than its size.

Vilnius old town & Užupis
One of Europe's largest baroque old towns — a UNESCO warren of churches, courtyards and the Gothic St. Anne's (which Napoleon wanted to carry home) — plus Užupis, the tiny bohemian "republic" of artists with its own tongue-in-cheek constitution nailed to a wall. Climb Gediminas Tower for the red-roof panorama.
Trakai Island Castle
A storybook red-brick castle on an island in a lake, ringed by water and reachable by footbridge — the medieval seat of Lithuania's grand dukes, half an hour from Vilnius. Rent a rowboat, try the Karaite kibinai pastries, and photograph it from every angle.
The Hill of Crosses
A hillside near Šiauliai bristling with hundreds of thousands of crosses — a spontaneous, defiant place of pilgrimage that survived repeated Soviet bulldozing to become a moving symbol of Lithuanian faith and resistance. Eerie, powerful and utterly unique.
The Curonian Spit
A UNESCO sliver of shifting sand dunes and pine forest curving into the Baltic, shared with Russia — elk in the woods, cormorant colonies, the amber coast, and the artists' village of Nida where Thomas Mann summered. Cycle the spit and climb the Parnidis dune at sunset.
