Art-nouveau Riga, Baltic beaches & untouched forest
Latvia is the middle Baltic state and, many argue, the most beautiful — its capital Riga holds the world's greatest concentration of art-nouveau architecture, its coast runs to white-sand beaches and pine, and half the country is forest so intact that lynx, wolves and beavers still roam it.

Riga's old town
A UNESCO medieval core of gabled guildhalls, the House of the Blackheads, cobbled squares and the towering St. Peter's spire — compact, atmospheric and buzzing with café and bar life. The Central Market's zeppelin-hangar halls add the sensory, everyday counterpoint.
The art-nouveau district
A whole quarter of Riga — Alberta and Elizabetes streets — where Mikhail Eisenstein's fantastical jugendstil facades drip with sculpted faces, peacocks and flowing forms. One-third of central Riga is art nouveau, the densest such display anywhere on Earth. Look up constantly.
Jūrmala & the coast
A ribbon of white-sand beach and pine forest a short train from Riga, dotted with ornate wooden summer houses — the Baltic's genteel seaside resort, with spa hotels, amber on the sand and long, luminous northern evenings.
Gauja National Park
Latvia's "Switzerland" — a forested river valley of medieval castles (Turaida's red-brick tower, the ruins of Sigulda and Cēsis), sandstone caves, and canoeing beneath sandstone cliffs. The country's green heart, an hour from the capital and gorgeous in autumn gold.
