Kazakhstan is the giant nobody pictures — the ninth-largest country on Earth, a Central Asian expanse of steppe, canyon, alpine lake and desert bigger than Western Europe, with a fraction of its people and almost none of its tourists. It swings from the tree-lined, mountain-backed charm of Almaty to the sci-fi skyline of a purpose-built new capital rising from the bare steppe, and out to landscapes that feel like the edge of the world.
Nomadic heritage runs deep — eagle hunters, felt yurts, horse culture and the fermented-mare's-milk hospitality of the steppe — while visa-free access, a modern rail network and genuine affordability make this vast, offbeat country far easier to travel than its reputation suggests.

Almaty & the mountains
The leafy former capital sits beneath the snow-capped Tian Shan — ride the cable car to Kok-Tobe, skate at the world's highest Olympic rink at Medeu, hike or ski at Shymbulak, and browse the Green Bazaar. Central Asia's most liveable, café-rich city, with alpine wilderness on its doorstep.
Charyn Canyon
A "Grand Canyon's little brother" three hours from Almaty — the Valley of Castles' red rock spires eroded into fantastical shapes, glowing at sunset, with a river and campsite at the bottom. The most dramatic of the steppe's many surprises, and an easy overnight adventure.
The Kolsai & Kaindy lakes
Alpine turquoise lakes in the Tian Shan — Kolsai's chain of three ringed by spruce forest, and the surreal Kaindy, where a submerged forest's bare trunks stand up through crystal water. Hiking, horse riding and yurt-stay country, a few hours from the city.
Astana's futurist skyline
The purpose-built capital on the bare northern steppe is architecture as statement — a Norman Foster pyramid and glass tent-mall, the Bayterek tower, and gleaming ministries rising from nowhere. Bizarre, brash and fascinating, a monument to a young nation's ambition.

When to Go
Late spring
Green steppe and wildflowers, mountain lakes thawed, mild cities. The prime window.
Early autumn
Golden larches, warm days, harvest, thin crowds — beautiful for canyons and lakes.
Summer
Hot on the steppe but ideal for the high Tian Shan lakes and hiking.
Winter
Bitterly cold on the steppe (Astana among the coldest capitals on Earth); Almaty skiing is the exception.
