Few small countries carry the weight of Israel — the holy city of three world religions, the lowest point on Earth, and a Mediterranean beach culture all within an hour's drive. It compresses millennia of history and stark modern contrast into a space smaller than New Jersey, and rewards the traveler with a density of meaning found almost nowhere else.

Jerusalem's Old City
Within one square kilometre of walls: the Western Wall, the golden Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Via Dolorosa — the holiest ground of Judaism, Islam and Christianity, layered atop each other in a warren of four quarters. Walk the ramparts and the labyrinthine bazaars; the intensity is the point.
Tel Aviv
The counterweight to Jerusalem's solemnity: a Mediterranean beach city of Bauhaus architecture (the "White City," UNESCO-listed), a legendary food and nightlife scene, the Carmel Market's buzz, and the ancient port of Jaffa on its southern edge. Modern, secular, and famously wide awake.
Floating in the Dead Sea
At 430m below sea level — the lowest point on the planet — the water is so salty you bob like a cork, coated in mineral mud reputed to work wonders on the skin. Ringed by desert cliffs, it's one of travel's genuinely strange, unforgettable dips.
Masada & the Negev
The clifftop fortress where Jewish rebels made their last stand against Rome, reached by a dawn hike (or cable car) for sunrise over the Dead Sea — and beyond it, the Negev's Ramon Crater, a vast erosion cirque best explored on desert hikes and jeep tours, stars blazing above.
