French Polynesia is where the overwater bungalow was invented and the tropical-paradise cliché was, frankly, earned. 118 islands scattered across an expanse of Pacific the size of Europe — jagged green volcanic peaks rising from lagoons in every shade of blue, coral reefs teeming with rays and sharks, and a Polynesian culture of tattoo, dance and flower crowns that Gauguin crossed the world to paint.
Bora Bora is the honeymoon icon, but the archipelagos reward the explorer: Moorea's heart-shaped drama a ferry from Tahiti, the Tuamotu atolls' drift-diving, and the wild, ancient Marquesas. Bora Bora
The most beautiful lagoon on Earth — Mount Otemanu's green spire rising from a ring of turquoise water and motu islets, encircled by the overwater bungalows that made it famous. Snorkel with rays and blacktip sharks, circle the island by boat, and watch the volcano turn pink at sunset from your deck.
Moorea
Bora Bora's wilder, cheaper, arguably lovelier sister — a heart-shaped island of shark-tooth peaks, pineapple plantations and two deep bays, a 30-minute ferry from Tahiti. Hike to the Belvedere lookout, swim with humpbacks (Jul–Nov), and 4x4 the jagged interior.
The lagoons & drift diving
The Tuamotu atolls — Rangiroa, Fakarava — offer some of the planet's greatest diving: drifting the passes on the tide amid walls of sharks, dolphins and jacks in gin-clear water. Above the surface, every island lagoon is a private aquarium of coral, rays and impossible blue.
Volcanic peaks & Polynesian culture
Beyond the water: waterfall hikes in Tahiti's green interior, the sacred marae stone temples, Papeete's market and roulotte food trucks, and the tattoo, tamure dance and Heiva festival culture that defines Ma'ohi identity. The islands' soul is as compelling as their lagoons.

When to Go
Dry season
Cooler, less humid, sunny and calm — best for lagoons, hiking and diving. The prime window.
Peak dry
Humpback whales off Moorea and Rurutu, the Heiva cultural festival in July, ideal weather.
Shoulder
Warmer, brief showers, softer edges of the wet season and thinner crowds.
Wet season
Hot, humid, with heavier rain and cyclone risk — cheaper but less reliable.
