Estonia is the improbable double act: a capital with one of Europe's best-preserved medieval old towns, and a country so digitally advanced it invented Skype, votes online and calls itself e-Estonia. The smallest Baltic state wears its Nordic-meets-Soviet-meets-Hanseatic history lightly, and rewards visitors with cobbled turrets, half the land under forest, and prices that stayed friendly.
Tallinn's walled Old Town is the headline — a fairy-tale of spires and merchant houses — but Estonia's real character is quieter: bog-walking on wooden boardwalks, spa islands, a coastline of empty beaches, and a song-festival culture that literally sang the country to independence.

Tallinn's Old Town
A UNESCO maze of turreted walls, Gothic guildhalls and the pastel merchant houses of the Hanseatic heyday — plus the onion domes of Alexander Nevsky and viewpoints over red-tile roofs to the sea. Medieval by day, a buzzing bar-and-café scene by night; explore the trendy Telliskivi and Rotermann quarters for the modern contrast.
The medieval towers & walls
Climb the surviving ramparts and towers — Estonia's Old Town keeps more of its medieval wall than almost any city in northern Europe — for the layered rooftops-and-spires panorama. The Kiek in de Kök tower and Bastion Tunnels tell the fortifications' bloody history.
Saaremaa & the islands
The largest Estonian island keeps windmills, a bishop's castle, spa hotels and a slower, older rhythm — juniper and limestone country reached by ferry, where the Soviet era barely intruded. Muhu and Hiiumaa deliver more of the same peaceful, forested, coastal calm.
Bogs, forests & the wild half
