Ecuador
Galápagos wildlife, volcano avenues & the Andes in miniature
Ecuador packs a continent into a country the size of Colorado: Amazon lodges a morning's travel from glaciated volcanoes, colonial Quito at 2,850m, Pacific surf towns — and, a thousand kilometres offshore, the Galápagos, where evolution's laboratory remains open to visitors and the wildlife never learned to fear us.
It's South America's most efficient sampler: short distances, dollar economy (literally — the US dollar is the currency), and the famed Avenue of the Volcanoes running past páramo, crater lakes and market towns where the fedora never went out of style.
A continent packed into a country the size of Colorado — plus evolution's laboratory offshore.
Don't Miss
The Unmissables

The Galápagos
Giant tortoises, marine iguanas sneezing salt, blue-footed boobies dancing a metre away — the fearlessness is the miracle. Cruises reach the outer islands' fauna; land-based hopping from Santa Cruz and Isabela does 70% of the magic at half the cost. Either way: snorkel every chance offered.

Quito's colonial crown
The best-preserved historic centre in the Americas (UNESCO's first listing, alongside Kraków): gold-drenched La Compañía, plaza life at 2,850m, and the TelefériQo cable car to 4,000m for volcano roll-call on clear mornings.

Cotopaxi & the Avenue of the Volcanoes
A near-perfect snow cone at 5,897m anchoring a corridor of giants. Hike to the refuge at 4,864m, bike down the flanks, or base at a páramo hacienda with horses and hummingbirds. Quilotoa's emerald crater lake is the avenue's scene-stealer.

Wildlife without the fences
Sea lions commandeer benches in Galápagos ports; whales breach off Puerto López (Jun–Sep); the Amazon's clay licks flash with parrots a short flight east. Ecuador's biodiversity-per-kilometre may be the planet's highest — plan idle time for it to find you.
