Bulgaria is the Balkans' great-value secret: Europe's oldest continuously inhabited towns, monasteries frescoed in gold, mountains that ski in winter and hike all summer, and a Black Sea coast where the sand is warm and the bill is a rounding error. Rila Monastery
Bulgaria's spiritual heart, hidden in a forested valley: candy-striped arcades, a fresco-drenched church and mountain silence, an easy day trip from Sofia. Combine with the nearby Seven Rila Lakes hike for the country's finest mountain-and-monastery double.
Plovdiv's old town
