Christ the Redeemer & Corcovado
Thirty metres of open-armed Art Deco above seven hundred metres of forested granite. Take the cog train up through Tijuca forest at opening time — the morning light comes from behind the statue and the crowds are still at breakfast.
Sugarloaf by cable car
Two cable-car hops to the granite bullet guarding Guanabara Bay. Time it for an hour before sunset: day views on the way up, the city igniting its lights on the way down, and Corcovado silhouetted against the afterglow.
Copacabana to Ipanema
Four kilometres of the world's most famous sand, best consumed like a carioca: coconut water from a kiosk, footvolley spectating, agua de coco at posto 9, and the Arpoador rock at sunset — where the whole beach applauds the sun.
