Botswana chose exclusivity over volume — low-impact, high-value tourism that keeps the crowds out and the wilderness vast — and the result is the most pristine safari on the continent. The Okavango Delta by mokoro
Glide through the channels in a traditional dugout canoe, poled by a guide who reads the water — frogs on the reeds, elephants crossing ahead, hippos grunting nearby. The delta's island camps deliver walking safaris and game drives in a wilderness reachable only by bush plane.
Chobe's elephant kingdom
The riverfront holds one of Africa's densest elephant populations — 120,000 across the park — and a sunset boat cruise puts you among herds drinking and swimming at the water's edge, with buffalo, hippo and every fish eagle in the country. The most accessible of Botswana's big experiences.
The Makgadikgadi salt pans
A dry lakebed the size of Portugal — blinding white to the horizon, quad-biked across to sleep out under the stars, with habituated meerkats and (in green season) one of Africa's last great zebra migrations. Otherworldly emptiness at its most complete.
Big-cat country
Moremi Game Reserve and the Linyanti concessions deliver Botswana's legendary predator action — lion prides, wild dog packs (the delta is their global stronghold), leopard in the riverine forest. Small camps mean you'll often have a sighting to yourself.
