Mostar's Stari Most
The 16th-century Ottoman bridge — destroyed in the war, rebuilt stone by stone — arcs over the turquoise Neretva while local divers leap 24 metres from its crown. The cobbled old bazaar of coppersmiths and Herzegovinian light make it the Balkans' most photogenic town.
Sarajevo's crossroads
Walk from Ottoman Baščaršija — bazaar, mosques, copper alleys, the best ćevapi in the Balkans — to Austro-Hungarian boulevards in a single block, the "meeting of cultures" line marked in the pavement. The war-history sites (Tunnel of Hope, Latin Bridge) give the beauty its weight.
Kravice Waterfalls
A 25-metre horseshoe of falls tumbling into a swimmable emerald pool an hour from Mostar — Herzegovina's natural showpiece, with café terraces and boat rides. Go early in summer to swim before the day-trippers arrive.
Blagaj Tekke
A whitewashed 600-year-old dervish monastery built into a cliff at the source of the Buna river, where turquoise water gushes straight from the rock face. Tea on the terrace over the spring is one of the country's serene moments.
