The Reef, the Rock & ten thousand beaches
Australia's problem is arithmetic: a country the size of continental Europe with the population of the Netherlands, and most of its wonders separated by airline distances. The solution is ruthlessness. Don't "do" Australia — pick a coast and a wonder, and give them time to work on you.
The east-coast classic (Sydney, the Reef, maybe Melbourne) earns its popularity. But the deeper Australia is in its emptiness: Uluru changing colour through a desert dusk, the Kimberley's ancient gorges, a west-coast reef where you swim beside whale sharks with nobody else in the water.
Don't "do" Australia — pick a coast and a wonder, and give them time to work on you.

Sydney Harbour
Opera House sails, the great steel coathanger of the bridge, and ferries stitching it all together. Do the Manly ferry at sunset, the Bondi-to-Coogee clifftop walk at dawn, and swim in an ocean pool — Sydney's best habit.
Uluru at dusk
The Rock doesn't photograph; it radiates. Through a desert sunset it cycles ochre, rust, blood-red, violet — and the silence around it explains why Anangu law holds it sacred. Walk the 10km base loop at dawn; the Field of Light installation after dark is worth the add-on.
The Great Barrier Reef
The largest living structure on Earth, visible from space and better from a snorkel. Boat from Cairns or Port Douglas to the outer reef — or go quieter from Lady Elliot or Heron Island, where turtles outnumber tourists.
The Great Ocean Road
Australia's definitive drive: 250km of surf towns, koala forests and the Twelve Apostles rising from Southern Ocean spray. Two days minimum, ending at the Apostles for sunset when the buses have gone back to Melbourne.

Spring
Sydney sparkles, the Red Centre is bearable, whale season peaks on both coasts.
Autumn
Reef visibility at its best, southern vineyards in harvest, summer crowds gone.
Winter
Perfect in the tropics (dry season for the Reef and Top End); cool in the southern cities.
Summer
Beach glory but school holidays, 45°C in the Centre, and stinger season in tropical seas.
