Ancient monasteries on volcanic plateaus & the world's oldest wine
Armenia is one of the world's oldest civilizations and its first Christian nation, and it wears that antiquity in stone: monasteries carved into gorges and clifftops across a dramatic volcanic highland, watched over by the perfect snow cone of Mount Ararat (just across the closed Turkish border, and the national heartache and symbol). Few countries pack this much history and mountain beauty into so small a space.
It's also astonishingly welcoming and affordable, with a year of visa-free stay for most, a food-and-wine culture reaching back 6,000 years (the world's oldest winery was found in an Armenian cave), and a capital, Yerevan, whose pink-tufa boulevards and café-and-cognac scene surprise every first-time visitor.

Yerevan & Mount Ararat
The pink-stone capital — one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities — arranges its cafés, cascades and cognac distilleries with Ararat filling the southern skyline. Climb the Cascade's sculpture-lined steps at sunset for the mountain's pink-gold glow, and visit the sobering genocide memorial to understand the nation's soul.
Geghard Monastery
A UNESCO wonder partly hewn directly from the cliff rock at the head of a gorge — chapels carved into the mountain, acoustics that turn a chanted note into something otherworldly, and the temple of Garni (the only Greco-Roman colonnade in the region) a short drive down the valley.
Tatev Monastery & the wings
A 9th-century monastery on a plateau above a plunging gorge, reached by the "Wings of Tatev" — the world's longest reversible cable car, a 5.7km glide over canyon and river. Remote, spectacular, and one of the Caucasus's great sights.
Lake Sevan & wine country
The vast blue "jewel of Armenia" sits at 1,900m, its peninsula monastery a summer swimming-and-khorovats (barbecue) spot. South, the Areni region pours wine from a 6,100-year-old tradition — visit the cave where the world's oldest winery was unearthed and taste the modern revival.

Wildflower highlands, snow still on Ararat, mild Yerevan, monasteries at their most photogenic.

Grape harvest, golden gorges, warm days — arguably the single best window.
Summer
Hot in Yerevan but perfect for high Sevan and mountain monasteries; peak festival season.
Winter
Cold and snowy; Tsaghkadzor skis, but mountain roads and remote sites get tricky.
